Fundamental Pictures declared the at first titled The Ring 3D with F. Javier Gutiérrez coordinating. In August 2014, Paramount was in converses with Akiva Goldsman to compose a third draft of the screenplay, beforehand dealt with by David Loucka and Jacob Aaron Estes.In November, Gutiérrez posted an Instagram photograph that demonstrated that the present title of the spin-off is Rings.On January 16, 2015, Matilda Lutz was added to the thrown for the lead role.Alex Roe was thrown for the male lead part on March 20, 2015. Chief photography on the film started on March 23, 2015, in Atlanta and wrapped on May 31, 2015. Reshoots occurred in July 2016.

Foremost Pictures initially set the film for a13 November, 2015, discharge, yet in September 2015, the film was pulled from the timetable. In October 2015, Paramount rescheduled the discharge date to 1,April 2016. On 17 February, 2016, the film was rescheduled for discharge on 28 October, 2016, to replace Paramount’s past October loathsomeness discharge staple, the Paranormal Activity arrangement, which finished in 2015 with Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. On 22 September, 2016, the film was deferred to 3 February, 2017, well on the way to maintain a strategic distance from rivalry with Ouija: Origin of Evil, abandoning it as the main blood and guts movie that appeared around Halloween 2016.

In January 2017 Paramount discharged a trick video where a performer dressed as Samara hopped out of a TV to alarm unwitting supporters at a hardware store.
